Natt på Museet

Fredag 16.april kl.19.00 blir det mulighet til å overnatte blant dyrene på Hvalfangstmuseet! "Natt på Museet" passer for barn i alderen 8-12 år. Det blir aktiviteter, film, quiz med premier, kveldsmat og enkel frokost. Ta med lommelykt! Alle barn må ha følge av en voksen. Påmeldingsfrist: 9.april. Hvalfangst i dag - ny utstilling

En ny utstillingsmodul er på plass i musets hovedutstilling. Der får du svar på bl.a. følgende spørsmål: Hvem fanger hval idag? Hvilke arter er utsrydningstruet? Hvor mange hval finnes? Hva truer hvalene i dag? Samtidig presenteres informasjon om aksjoner mot hvalfangst og om norsk vågehvalfangst.

Hvalfangstmuseets ambisjoner om utvidelse er kommet ett skritt videre. Både Sandefjord kommune og styret i Vestfoldmuseene IKS har sagt OK til å sende søknad om investeringsmidler til Kulturdepartementet mfl. Utvidelsen av museet skal gi plass til å ta opp nye temaer knyttet til miljø- og ressursforvaltning. Utgangspun...ktet er historien om rovdriften på hvalen som et eksempel på hvordan vi mennesker ikke skal forvalte naturen.

NEW BOOK: On the Stromnes whaling station on South Georgia

The story about the Stromnes whaling station on South Georgia is very well documented in this book by Odd Galteland. He has dealt with the story of the companies that ran the station and their ups and downs; the story of whaling in the southern oceans; the decimation of the whales and of the living and working conditions of the workers. The book is richly illustrated and is written in Norwegian. It is for sale thorugh the museum shop.

NY BOK: Strømnes landstasjon på Syd Georgia

Historien om landstasjonen Strømnes på Syd Georgia er i denne boken grundig dokumentert av Odd Galteland. Han har tatt forseg selskapene som drev stasjonen i årene 1906-31. Det er historien om store fremganger, men også tilbakeslag og motgang. Historien om hvalfangsten i sydishavet, rovdriften på hvalen og om hvalfangernes bo-og arbeidsforhold. Boken selges bl.a. i museets butikk.

Den nylig publiserte antologien Kolonitid tar for seg et ukjent kapittel i norsk historie. En av bidragsyterne til Kolonitid er historiker og konservator ved Hvalfangstmuseet i Sandefjord, Dag Ingemar Børresen. Artikkelen ”The Boys will die like flies...” forteller om afrikansk arbeidskraft i norsk hvalfangst i europeiske kolonier i Afrika og den ukjente historien om afrikanere på hvalfangst i Antarktis.

The Blue Whale - largest mammal on the Planet

The Blue whale is the largest mammal that ever lived on the planet. The main attraction in the natural history section of the museum is a model of a full size Blue whale hanging from the ceiling. The Blue whales were hunted almost to extinction during the years of commercial whaling. In 1968 an estimated 200 individuals were left in the Southern Ocean. Latin name: Balaenoptera musculus Size: Maximum 30 metres, weight up to 120 tons Identification: Baleen whale. Bluish colour. Distinctive spout. Reproduction: A calf born every 2nd year Food: Krill Distribution: All oceans from the tropics to polar regions. Separate populations in the North Atlantic, North Pacific Ocean and the Southern hemisphere. Some groups migrate North or South during the summer months for food. Southern hemisphere population, 400-1,400 animals. Protection/Whaling: Totally protected. A small increase in the population in the Southern hemisphere and the Northern Atlantic.

Childrens' Activities and new Exhibit

Join us for childrens' activities Monday-Friday at 10.00-15.00. Café and a new exhibit "The World of Whales". The children can make their own toys in our museum "workshop" while the grownups enjoy a cup of coffee and a waffle in our summer café. The workshop is open 10.00-15.00 Monday-Friday until 7th August. The new exhbit "The World of Whales" takes us to where the whales live and we can learn about their behaviour and the threats that face them today.

Utstillinger i forandring

Utstillingene er museets ansikt utad. De er en viktig del av virksomheten og avgjørende i oppfyllelsen av vår visjon.
Museet har flere typer utstillinger - både faste og skiftende. Vi arbeider nå med å videreutvikle de faste utstillingene. Den eldste utstillingen fra 1917 har fått en "ansiktsløftning" - dyrene er reparert, ny beslyning er på plass og flotte fotografier av naturfotograf Tom Schandy er kommet på veggene. I kulturhistorisk avdeling fra 1982 er det kommet videoskjermer som viser fangstsituasjonen ombord på en hvalbåt og en ny modul om dagens situasjon "Status 2005: for og imot" er innstallert. I juni 2009 åpnet en utstillingen "I hvalen srike" om hvalen og miljøet i tilknytning til hvalskjelettene.

The museum produces written information about the history of whaling, whales and the environment, maritime history and local history. There is always a need for new information within a museum. Teaching, understanding and engagement are the structural elements of our vision. To be able to achieve this vision, knowledge is essential. We have to bring forth new associations within the history of whaling and make new analyses to bring it up to date. The production of information has and will be undertaken within our framework and resources or through co-operation with other relevant organizations.
