Visit to County Mayo, Ireland

27. nov 2018 - 31. mar 2019

Earlier this year, we were invited by the Norwegian Ambassador to Ireland, Else Berit Eikeland, to join her in a visit to County Mayo, Ireland with a view to forge ties based on Norwegian whaling activities in the county in the early 1900’s.

The National Parks & Wildlife Service were our hosts during the visit in September, led by Denis Strong. Our hosts went out of their way to make us feel welcome, accommodate our interests and share with us the natural, cultural and historical diversity of the area. These were particularly focused on the Norwegian whaling heritage in the area and included a visit to the exhibition on whaling (curated by Denis Strong) at the National Parks Centre, the ruins of the former whaling station at Blacksod Bay and an introduction to the staff and volunteers at the Ionad Deirbhile Heritage Centre, who have been looking into the history of the station and those who were employed within the local community.

We are very grateful for the opportunity to become better acquainted with this part of Norwegian whaling history and look forward to possibly working together on joint projects in the future.
