On the 25th October 1989, “Southern Actor” arrived in Sandefjord from Spain. The Whalers’ Club in Sandefjord started restoration work on the catcher. Their goal has been to restore the catcher to working order, enabling it to undertake different assignments as a part of the museum.
The Whale Catcher “Southern Actor” was built at Smiths Docks Ltd, England in 1950.
During the years 1951/52 until 1959/60 “Southern Actor” was catching whales for the floating factory ship “Southern Harvester”. During the 1960/61 season, it was out catching from Leith harbour, South Georgia and in 1961/62 worked with the floating factory ship “Southern Venturer”.
The catcher was then laid up until 1964 and sold to Elling Aarseth for whaling in Northern Norway and renamed ‘Polarbris 8’. Towards the end of the 1970’s it was sold again to Spain where it was out catching under the name ‘Ibsa Dos’ and later ‘Itxas Uno’.
“Sea Shepherd”, a dinghy from an anti-whaling organisation run by Paul Watson, mined the catcher in 1980 as a protest against whaling. It was repaired and was in operation until it was laid up again in 1985/86. Later, when Paul Watson was asked about “Southern Actor”, he answered that he was very happy that at last the catcher was where it belonged…… in a museum.
On the 25th October 1989, ” Southern Actor” arrived in Sandefjord from Spain. The Whalers Club of Sandefjord began the restoration of the catcher . “Southern Actor” is now restored to her former glory and is fully operative.
